VIRTUALIZATION

Virtualization, in computering, refers to the creation of a virtual, rather than actual, version of something, including but not limited to a virtual computer hardware platform, operating system (OS), storage device, or computer network resource. Virtualization began in 1960s mainframe computers as a method of logically dividing the system resources provided by mainframes between different applications. Since then, the meaning of the term has broadened, allowing administrators to avoid wasting expensive processing power.

Ready for the next steps? Learn about the various types of virtualization and find resources to help you begin your virtualization journey.

TYPES OF VIRTUALIZATION:

Network Virtualization

Network virtualization is the complete reproduction of a physical network in software. Applications run on the virtual network exactly the same as if on a physical network. Network virtualization presents logical networking devices and serviceslogical ports, switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, VPNs and more—to connected workloads. Virtual networks offer the same features and guarantees of a physical network with the operational benefits and hardware independence of virtualization.

Storage Virtualization

Storage virtualization is the pooling of physical storage from multiple network storage devices into what appears to be a single storage device that is managed from a central console. Storage virtualization is commonly used in storage area networks.

Server Virtualization

Server virtualization is the masking of server resources — including the number and identity of individual physical servers, processors and operating systems — from server users. The intention is to spare the user from having to understand and manage complicated details of server resources while increasing resource sharing and utilization and maintaining the capacity to expand later.

Data Virtualization

Data Virtualization is abstracting the traditional technical details of data and data management, such as location, performance or format, in favor of broader access and more resiliency tied to business needs.

Desktop Virtualization

Desktop virtualization is virtualizing a workstation load rather than a server. This allows the user to access the desktop remotely, typically using a thin client at the desk. Since the workstation is essentially running in a data center server, access to it can be both more secure and portable. The operating system license does still need to be accounted for as well as the infrastructure.

Application Virtualization

Application virtualization is abstracting the application layer away from the operating system. This way the application can run in an encapsulated form without being depended upon on the operating system underneath. This can allow a Windows application to run on Linux and vice versa, in addition to adding a level of isolation.

BENEFITS OF VIRTUALIZATION

Virtualization offer many benefits, such as, it can increase IT agility, flexibility, and scalability while creating significant cost savings. Workloads get deployed faster, performance and availability increases and operations become automated, resulting in IT that’s simpler to manage and less costly to own and operate. Additional benefits include:

Virtual Machine (VM)

A virtual computer system is known as a “virtual machine” (VM): is a computer file, typically called an image that behaves like an actual computer. Each self-contained VM is completely independent. Putting multiple VMs on a single computer enables several operating systems and applications to run on just one physical server, or “host”. Multiple virtual machines can run simultaneously on the same physical computer.

How are virtual machines managed?

Virtualization management is software that interfaces with virtual environments and the underlying physical hardware to simplify resource administration, enhance data analyses, and streamline operations. Each virtualization management system is unique, but most feature an uncomplicated user interface, streamline the VM creation process, monitor virtual environments, allocate resources, compile reports, and automatically enforce rules. Some solutions even integrate across hardware and software brands—allowing users to install the management system that’s best for them.

Advantages of a virtual machine

Cloud Computing

Virtualization is the software that manipulates the hardware. Cloud computing refers to the service that results from this manipulation. Most often, the cloud includes virtualization products to deliver the computing service. Cloud Computing can further the efficiency of your strategy – but only if it is done correctly.
