Fixing security cameras with motion detectors connected to a Network Video Recorder (NVR) can involve several steps, as the issue could stem from various sources, including camera settings, NVR settings, firmware issues, or network problems. Below are the general troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve motion detection recording errors:
This error can occur in any model or manufacturer of cameras, if after several configuration attempts the solution is not found, the following steps will help us to solve the problem at the software (firmware) level.
Check camera settings:
- Enabled: Ensure that you activate motion detection on the camera. Some cameras have a setting to turn off motion detection, which would prevent it from triggering recordings.
- Area: Ensure that you select correct detection. Cameras often allow you to choose the specific areas in the frame where motion detection is active.
- Sensitivity Settings: Adjust the motion detection sensitivity. If it’s too low, the camera might not detect motion correctly. If it’s too high, it might trigger false positives or even errors.
- Minimum Motion Threshold: Some cameras let you set a threshold for the object size that needs motion for detection. Ensure this is set appropriately for the environment.
Check NVR settings:
- Recording Schedule: Check the recording schedule on the NVR to ensure that you enabled and scheduled recording properly to motion-based. This device can record continuously or based on a specific time window.
- Motion Detection Recording Mode: Some NVRs allow you to set different modes (e.g., continuous, motion detection, alarm-triggered). Record Ensure the NVR to based on motion detection rather than continuous recording or manual triggers.
- Camera Configuration on NVR: Check if the NVR appropriately recognizes the camera’s motion detection settings. Sometimes, the configuration of NVR detect the camera’s motion events.
Identify the number of cameras that are presenting the problem. In our case most of the Motion activared camera of the same model had the problem, but not all of them, the difference was in the firmware version date of each of the cameras, as shown below.
Firmware Camera Working Correct (Example Camera D3)
Example Camera D4
Firmware update on cameras with motion detection recording error
For this example, we are going to upgrade the firmware of the cameras for this we enter the camera and go to the menu >> System >> Upgrade >> Select Firmware
After loading the firmware, we select upgrade.
Check network connection:
After updating the camera, we recommend rebooting, factory resetting, and reconfiguring it to apply changes correctly.
Bandwidth and Latency: Motion activared cameras may fail with insufficient bandwidth between the NVR and the cameras. Ensure the cameras and NVR are connected to a stable, high-speed network.
Cable and Wi-Fi Connection: Ensure IP cameras are connected via a stable Ethernet cable or a strong Wi-Fi signal. A weak or intermittent connection can cause recording errors.
Checking the operation of the cameras in motion detection recordings.
After the above steps we must confirm the operation of the camera from the NVR. And then perform the configuration of the security cameras with motion detectors recordings, as we can confirm the problem is solved by updating the firmware.
