DIY garage door installation

DIY garage door installation on your own can be an excellent way to save money, and it’s an achievable project for those with a bit of handy experience. However, due to the size, weight, and complexity of the components, it’s important to approach the installation with proper preparation and safety in mind.

We have created a simplified step-by-step guide to help you with your parking garage access control installation.

Before you start: Preparation

Select the appropriate size, style and material for your garage door. Most doors are available in steel, wood or aluminium and in various styles such as sectional, roller or tilt.

Check the Garage Door Kit or Parts

Read Instructions: Before anything, read the manual or instructions with your garage door kit. Ensure you fully understand the assembly process and installation steps.

Inventory Check: Verify all the necessary parts are included in your kit. This includes panels, tracks, springs, rollers, bolts, nuts, and the opener (if it’s part of the kit).
The job requires the right tools (please refer to the section below for more information).

Measure the Garage Opening

Height & Width: Measure the width and height of the garage door opening to confirm that the door will fit. Double-check these measurements, as a mismatch could cause installation issues.

Level the Floor: Check that the garage floor is level. If it’s not, you may need to level the tracks during installation.

Clearance Above and Side: If you’re installing an automatic opener, ensure you have enough clearance above the door for the track system and opener. You will also need enough space above the door for the tracks and springs.

Prepare the tools and equipment

You’ll need several tools to complete the installation:

  • Drill and Drill Bits: These are used to attach hardware and tracks.
  • Wrenches and Socket Set: For tightening bolts.
  • Screwdrivers: Both flathead and Phillips for screws.
  • Measuring Tape: For accurate measurements.
  • Level: To make sure the door is installed straight.
  • Ladder: To reach higher areas while setting up the tracks and springs.
  • Safety Glasses & Gloves: These are used for protection while handling heavy or sharp parts.

Take safety precautions:

Proper clothing: Wear sturdy clothing with long sleeves to protect your skin.
Work for two people: Installing a parking garage access control door is heavy; some parts, like lifting the door panels in place, require the help of a second person.

Handle springs carefully: DIY garage door installation springs can be under extreme stress, and incorrect handling can be dangerous. It is advisable to seek professional help for the installation of torsion springs.

Make sure the Garage is ready:

Clear the Area: Move any cars, tools, or other obstructions from the garage. This will give you plenty of room to work and prevent damage to your vehicle or the door.
Organize all parts and tools in an organized manner to create a workspace that will eliminate the need to search for pieces when necessary.

Ensure Electrical Access (If Installing an Opener)

  • If you’re also installing a garage door opener, ensure that there’s access to a power outlet or that you have the necessary wiring to connect the opener. Some garage door openers must be wired into the home’s electrical system.

Plan for Disposal of Old Door (If Replacing)

  • If you are replacing an old garage door, plan for the disposal of the old door and parts. This could include recycling or disposing of metal and other components in an eco-friendly way.

Ensure Electrical Access (If Installing an Opener)

Have a helper (optional)
Garage doors are heavy and difficult to operate, so it is useful (and often necessary) to have a second person help lift the panels and secure them in place.

Check the time
Installing a garage door is easier when the weather is dry and moderate. Avoid doing this in heavy rain or extreme cold, as it can make certain parts slippery and more difficult to handle.
