The Nedap uPass Target is a high-end, long-range UHF RFID Antenna specifically designed for automatic vehicle identification (AV), traffic flow monitoring, and access systems in demanding industrial environments.
Unlike standard proximity readers that require a card swipe from a few inches away, the uPass Target utilizes Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) technology to identify moving vehicles, rolling stock, and heavy equipment seamlessly from a distance.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The system of this Nedap Antenna operates through a combination of long-range Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) rafio waves, passive tag activation, and automated communication with an access system panel.
The Reader Emits a UHF Signal
The uPass Target reader continuously transmits an Ultra-High Frequency radio signal at 865–868 MHz or 902–928 MHz, depending on the region. Furthermore, its integrated antenna uses circular polarization, so it sends radio waves in a rotating circular pattern instead of a single straight line.
The Tag Enters the Field and Powers Up
When a vehicle approaches the secure perimeter, its credential enters the reader’s adjustable transmission field. Also, the credential may use a windshield sticker, rearview mirror hangtag, or heavy-duty exterior tag.
- Passive tags do not contain a battery.
- The tag’s internal antenna captures energy from the reader’s incoming UHF radio waves and powers the microchip.
- The reader’s circularly polarized antenna lets the tag communicate at horizontal, vertical, or angled positions.
Data Transmission (Up to 15-18 Meters Away)
Once energized, the tag sends a modified radio signal back to the reader through a process called backscatter. Basically, this signal contains unique credential data, such as a Wiegand, Magstripe, or Nedap XS formatted ID.
- Standard windshield tags and hangtags support automatic transactions at distances up to 50 feet (15 meters).
- Specialized Heavy Duty Tags mounted on metal surfaces extend the read range to 60 feet (18 meters).
Optional Dual-Lane Expansion
If the site requires monitoring both an entry and an exit lane (or an exceptionally wide driveway), an optional external uPass Target Antenna can be connected to the main reader via its TNC input. Additionally, when a vehicle passes the secondary antenna, it captures the tag’s data and channels it directly back through the single primary uPass Target unit.
Authentication and Panel Communication
The reader interprets the incoming signal and sends the tag’s data to the facility’s access control system or parking controller.
- Standard setups use interfaces such as Wiegand, Magstripe, RS422, or RS485.
- Modern high-security setups transmit data through Ethernet or serial connections with the OSDP v2 protocol. OSDP creates a Secure Channel that encrypts data between the reader and the control panel to prevent wiretapping or skimming.
- Nedap-formatted credentials include security protections that prevent unauthorized tag copying and vehicle tracking fraud.
Action and Visual Feedback
After the access system panel verifies the credential data, it opens the gate or barrier. At the same time, the uPass Target provides immediate feedback:
- Visual LED Feedback: Built-in blue, green, and red LEDs change color instantly to confirm that the system detected and authorized a tag. The reader can control the LEDs automatically, or the access control panel can control them through active-low digital inputs.
- Relay Output: The reader includes a built-in relay output that supports 24 VDC 2A. This relay can directly trigger external hardware or signaling systems after a valid read.
