Traditional Analog Security Camera measure resolution by the number of horizontal lines called TVL. The higher the number of lines in an image means better video resolution (IP Security Camera measure resolution in pixels). A Analog Security Camera records images and then send their video signal over a Coax Cable or UTP cable to a Security Camera DVR (Digital Video Recorder). The DVR digitizes the image in order to process it, then converts it back to analog to transmit the video to another analog device, like a security cameras DVR or a video monitor where it is stored on hard drives.
An Analog Security Camera's main characteristic is the need to connect its cable from the security camera all the way to the DVR. The cable used for analog security cameras is the coaxial cable. Since analog security camera technology requires a coax cable to be connected to each analog security camera and make a point-to-point connection, if there are several security cameras the diameter of the channel through which the cable is sent increases. Nowadays, baluns can also be used to transmit analog video, power voltage and data over a UTP network cable. If you aren't too familiar with the term "baluns" used in analog security cameras, you might ask yourself: what are baluns? Why are they important in an analog security camera system installation?
Video baluns, also known as CAT5 baluns, get their name from the abbreviation of balance + unbalance. Video baluns enable security camera installers to use CAT5 cable when running video (and optionally power) for analog security camera system. A video balun is an important accessories that converts between a balanced signal and an unbalanced signal. It is positioned on both ends of the CAT5 cable run and uses one of the twisted pairs from the CAT5 cable to transfer the video from the security camera to a DVR or monitor. There are other versions of video baluns that also support running power to analog security camera, in addition to the video. These are some of the most common reasons why a security camera installer would choose to use a video balun when running CAT-5 cable for HD analog security cameras.
