What is Power over Coaxial (POC)?

Being in the surveillance industry, we get ask often what is POC (aka Power over Coaxial). In this blog we will explain how POC works and describe its main benefits.

What is Power over Coaxial (POC)?

Hikvision, the world's leading supplier of innovative video surveillance products and solutions, was the first to introduced Power over Coaxial to its new range of HD-TVI Security Cameras and DVRs. Hikvision’s Power-over-Coax (PoC) feature radically simplifies installation, as one coaxial cable carries both the video signal and the power supply. This translates to reduced installation time, which also translates to a reduction in both installation and material costs! In addition, the Turbo HD 3.0 analog solution supports UTC for remote set-up and configuration and enables control of the OSD menu and PTZ control via coaxial cable, enabling faster camera installation and easier management. All that’s required is for the cameras to connect into the back of one of their range of PoC compatible DVRs.

Power over Coaxial is a new power system that can supply energy to Analog HD Security Camera Systems through coax cable, without any other power source. PoC basically means that the power for the camera is supplied by the DVR via coaxial video cable (RG59 or similar), which removes the requirement for separate cables and power supplies which would otherwise be needed to power your cameras. PoC technology combines and transmits high-definition video signal, coaxial signal, and power over a coaxial cable. For installers this means a much more time and cost efficient installation. This means that many customers with existing CCTV systems in their homes can upgrade the cameras and recorder without needing to run a new set of cables around their property.

How does Power over Coaxial (POC) works?

When a PoC unit is powered on, the camera and the PoC module are connected through a coaxial cable. The camera transmits the video signal to the PoC unit. The PoC unit supplies the power to the camera through the coaxial cable. The PoC unit then transmits the video signal to the DVR through the coaxial cable. The security camera and DVR connect directly through a coaxial cable, which simultaneously transmits video, control signals, and power.

Main Benefits / Advantages of using Power over Coaxial in

Surveillance Camera Systems:

• Reduces both installation time and material costs.

Analog CCTV users can now enjoy 5MP HDTVI and 4K video resolution while using their existing cabling infrastructure.

• Power over Coax can greatly increase the length of cable over which you can run the camera. PoC extends this distance to up to 200m!

PoC systems do not require installation of power supplies, power cables, connectors or sockets.

• PoC systems are versatile and provides a new tool for installers or DIY users looking to set up a hassle free, plug and play CCTV system.
